Mission

“Happiness is not at all in having a lot of money, honors or power, but in finding your calling. Whoever finds his mission is happy!...When God calls us to carry out a mission in His name, He does not promise that it will be easy. He only promises to be with us. He does not promise to give us magical powers to accomplish it. He only promises to empower us with the gifts of the Sprit. He does not demand that we be successful. He only asks us to be faithful…We should neither boast in what we do nor think too little of ourselves. Each one of us is important to God and has a mission to accomplish here on earth.” (Sergey Krapivin, Fr. Basil, Foundation Study Bible, 1 Corinthians 12:18)

“God is all-powerful and does not need us to fulfill His will. He could simply say the Word, and it would be done. Or He could make His assignment easy for us to carry out. But the Lord gives us the privilege to serve Him. He honors us with His calling not only for His sake and not only for the sake of others. He gives us His work to do for our sake. Every calling, every challenge, and every mission that comes from the Lord benefits our souls. Despite the difficulties, fulfilling the Almighty’s will strengthens our faith, bolsters our willingness to obey the Lord, and increases our love for God and those we are called to serve.” (Fr. Basil)

“For us Joseph the Fair is an example of forgiveness of enemies who hated him profoundly. And his forgiveness of his brothers saved all the people of Israel. The power of forgiveness saves the life of an individual, of a nation and of all mankind. The Lord had His own plan for Joseph. But He also has a secret plan for every person, which He brings to perfection, co-working with him. In the wonderful Divine Economy no one is rated lower than another. Everyone has their own mission in this world, according to the talents they are endowed with. We Christians understand this better than others do, as we believe that Christ renewed all of humanity by being incarnated in a human body.” (Metropolitan Serafim Joanta)

“The Meeting between Simeon and the Christ-child marks the meeting of two Covenants, Old and New. It celebrates the fulfillment of God’s promise to bring deliverance and salvation to what St. Paul calls “the Israel of God,” the Church, and through the Church, to the world. That deliverance and salvation, however, are achieved only through the suffering and death of the crucified Lord. This little child, the eternal God, accomplishes His mission only by His willingness to follow the way of the Cross.” (Fr. John Breck)

“Our mission to the world is simple: to love all regardless of who or what they identify themselves as. We may rightly ask, What is love? Is it affirmation or acceptance? Is it blind affection? No. Love is selflessness. It is to seek and do what is best for the other, what God would have us do. It is to become a sacrifice for the sake of the other, rooted in an ascetical self-denial.” (Fr. Joshua Lucas)
